Finding a New Life at 60!August Athlete 2016

I’m Monty and I’m 66 years young! In 1975, I left the Armed Forces with a 25% disability! I was told that I be in a wheelchair by the time I was 45!

After experiencing the feel of being an athlete when I was young, I spent the next forty years going through weight fluctuations until I finally came to a reality crossroads! In 2000, messed-up blood work numbers showed I had Type 2 Diabetes. I attributed this to years of eating garbage, drinking excessively and forgetting what exercise was! My maximum density had soared to a whopping 258 lbs!

I immediately got rid of 30 lbs the wrong way, slipped, and started going back up. My granddaughter was born in 2006 and I realized I might not live to see her grow up! I needed to focus! My wife Darren, and I tried to find ways to move to Florida to be closer to my Gianna. She was given the opportunity for a transfer and we made it to Tampa Bay in 2009. I was down to around 222.

By Oct 16, 2010, I weighed 215. I focused on embracing a healthier lifestyle thanks again to Darren, who shared a healthy program she started to do. By the end of that month, I had started walking, I realized strength training again, I started fueling clean, and accepted a healthier lifestyle (Slowly but safely). I also discovered I loved walking 5Ks and had completed 4. However, I always envied the runners going by, so I trained and became a runner at 61!

With the guidance, inspiration, motivation and support given to me by my wife Darren, I lost 57 lbs inside of 5 months, TOTALING 100 lbs! I reached my goal weight! I adjusted for Running and Triathlon performance and have been maintaining for over 5 years now! Since Nov. 2010, I’ve done over 60 5Ks, 1 8K, 8 10K, 2 15Ks, 1 10Miler, 10 Half Marathons, 3 Duathlons, and 13 Triathlons!

I am starting my 4th year as a member of the “Outspokin Bicycles Multisport Team!” I’m blessed to have “La Familia” (My Teammates and Running Partners) who keep me inspired to go strong! They keep me challenged, inspired and motivated every day!  I love them all!

I’m on the journey and I love it! I embrace accountability every day! The best way I can pay it forward is to be a positive force, lead by example and help others along our journey!

In Mar 2016, I celebrated 7 years cancer free! I’m embracing the fact that I’m a repeated survivor for a reason!   There are slight bumps in the journeys road. DON’T dwell on them. Taking a break or leaving a healthy lifestyle for a while only hurts you and makes for easy excuses! Focus on your dreams and you will soar to your goals. Do it for you! When realization hits you, it becomes clear and simple.  I will continue to enjoy a longer healthier life with my family here in Paradise! I’m taking back the years lost! Commitment, consistency and persistence, with no excuses or walking away, created my Fit Life!

As a cancer survivor, I’m blessed I can still be my Gianna’s “Pops!” I believe no child should ever have to go through the challenge of this cruel disease. I’m paying it forward by supporting the Children’s Cancer Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving families of children who have cancer or chronic blood disorders with emotional, financial and educational support necessary to cope with their life-threatening illness.
